Your Skincare Routine Should Feel Personal

We all have different stories to tell. One day your skin can be incredibly dry, while other days it may feel oily and slick. This brings us to the question, what is the right skincare routine for me?

If you're a novice to skincare, or are switching up your routine, prepare for an exciting, albeit overwhelming journey. The cosmetics industry is massive. It is also growing rapidly, and according to GMI Research, the Vietnamese Cosmetics Market is projected to hit USD 2.8 billion by 2032. This means a never-ending influx of new products, more choices, and an overwhelming industry for consumers to choose from.

But good skincare is not defined by the number of products you have, it is about your knowledge and understanding of your skin.

Before you start selecting products, let’s clarify a few common skincare misconceptions.

Great products are not always found at high-end stores. Many great products are actually very affordable and are found in your local pharmacy.

The skin is personal, meaning everyone's is different from one another. Just because your friend or your favorite social media personality has reached a desired skin goal, it does not mean you will be able to. You will have to go through some trial and error yourself to get to your goal skin.

And more steps do not mean better results. You do not need to establish a 20-step skincare routine over something you may really enjoy to do just to get to your goal skin.

Using buzzwords such as natural, anti-aging, and clean are just for marketing and should not be trusted. Read the labels and check the ingredients instead of trusting the labels.

Reading the ingredients instead of the marketing will make your skincare routine simpler.

The first big step to your better skincare routine is to know your skin.

After your next shower, wait a few minutes before putting any products on your skin and then observe your skin. If your skin feels tight or flaky, you have dry skin. If your skin becomes shiny quickly, you have oily skin. If only your forehead and nose look shiny, you have combination skin. If your skin feels balanced, congratulations, you have normal skin. If you suffer from acne, rosacea, or eczema, you may also have sensitive skin.

This will save you and money from spending on inadequate products because now you will be able to choose products wise.

The Three Core Steps Every Routine Needs

Complicated morning or night skincare routines are not necessary. Every skincare routine is built on three things. Cleaning Moisturizing Protecting Everything else is optional, to each their own.

Cleaning as a routine step is important, especially if you are applying other products.

Cleaning rids the skin of oils, dirt and makeup, and can be done once or twice a day.

Heavy makeups like sunscreens can be a struggle for some people to remove. To make things easy for yourself you can try double cleansing. First you can try an oil based cleanser, then follow up with a cleanser based on water.

People with oily skin prefer gel or foam based cleansers while those with dry or sensitive skin make a switch to a cream based cleanser.

People with oily skin often feel relieved knowing they should moisturize their skin in order for it to not produce more oil. Dry skin people prefer creams that are thicker with skin care ingredients like hydrating acids. Skin care gel don't feel oily and are more preferred by people with oily skin.

Applying a moisturizer on damp skin can be a good strategy to keep more skin and less dry. Dry skin can be relieved by thicker creams, while oily skin can be relieved with gel based moisturizer.

The best and number one way to protect you skin from sun aging is by using a sunscreen. Anyone can get used to wearing a sunscreen that is 30 SPF or higher every single day. Even if you are sitting by a window, you should be applying sunscreen. Wearing sunscreen daily protects your skin from any sun damage that will cause you to get dry, dark or age faster.

Optional adds to skin care include face mists for refreshment, and wipes to remove make up along with toners that stick for prep and skin hydration. Facial rollers can be a nice break while you do your skin care. They aren't necessary, but are nice to have.

The most important piece of advice is that each time you do your skin care it should be about being consistent. Not about being perfect.

Know your skin, and keep it simple. Only add new products when necessary, and keep in mind that a good routine is one that you can actually stick to.

Glowing skin is achieved one habit at a time, not all at once.
