Caleb Andrew's blog : How E-Commerce Is Transforming Cold Chain Logistics and Cold Storage Infrastructure
The Impact of The New E-Commerce on Cold Chain and Storage
The New E-Commerce and its Effect on Cold Chain Logistics
I have experienced how new e-commerce has changed the way we
do shopping. First with clothing and electronics, and now we even have
e-commerce for grocery shopping, frozen meals, fresh vegetables, and even
temperature-sensitive medicine. People want everything delivered to their door
and don’t seem to mind how quickly it needs to be done.
The change has altered an entire industry that not most
people know about. Cold chain logistics.
The buyer of an online grocery shopping transaction is about
to experience something new. The perception most online grocery shopping
customers carry is that the juiciness of the online grocery shopping experience
is its juiciness. They seem to have very little concern over its low horizon of
the gap that ever surely, extremely low tempered and frozen, and treated with a
limit to just strict degrees. The temperature of the food in the cold chain
logistics system. Cold. Frozen. Impeccably confined. It will simply remain
frozen. The entire process burns the fuel of specialized warehouses,
refrigerators, and temperature monitoring systems. The cold chain logistics
system harmoniously orchestrated in an enviable and cooperated way. The system
is the last one that will ever be neglected. It is always the one that will be
neglected. It is the cold chain.
And the strain continues to grow.
The Surge in Cold Storage Needs
Online grocery platforms and direct-to-consumer food brands
have emerged rapidly in the past few years. Growth has also been seen in the
e-commerce pharmacy space. All of these trends have contributed to the
burgeoning demand for cold storage.
Modern-day warehouses are no longer simply large boxes of
storage on the periphery of cities. They are specially designed to provide
temperature-controlled environments to keep various products within specific
temperature ranges. For example, frozen food requires one temperature setting,
fresh food requires another, and various medical products and vaccines require
even more stringent temperature controls.
I also find it fascinating how these types of facilities are
being located closer to city centers. With the need for more rapid delivery of
products to consumers, more temperature-controlled warehouses will have to be
built closer to urban centers.
And the Egypt Cold Storage Market is just the tip of the
iceberg. According to GMI Research, it is one of the numerous burgeoning cold
storage facility markets worldwide that is expected to continue rapid growth
through 2032. This level of growth clearly indicates the expanding influence of
e-commerce on regional distribution networks.
The Last Mile Is Where the Real Action Is.
When it comes to the last point in the supply chain, that is
where the process has the most potential for disruption.
Now the customer's home is the only stop left for the
product. Companies can't afford compromised quality, and losses are driven by
small delays and temperature fluctuations.
So insulated packaging, temperature monitoring devices, and
refrigerated vans are sheltered; in other words, over-packaging. IoT
temperature tracking devices are the 'newest' technology. If temperature
changes, the logistical team is notified instantly.
In regards to temperature changes and inadequate packaging,
these things prevent logistical teams from acting promptly. Routes, Vehicles,
and Timing all must be precise. One weak link damages the entire customer
journey.
Now, more than ever, clear and transparent technology is the
backbone of consumer expectations
Store sensors. Predictive analytics. GPS. Temperature
monitoring. Blockchain. Transparency is in demand. Reliability is in demand.
Proof is in demand.
SmartTech has identified most possible minimization factors
to track and waste.
Technological Agility
The instant demand for goods developed through e-commerce
makes purchasing an instant process with little to no thought or consideration,
pressing all elements of the supply chain, stretching the limit of the customer
purchasing through to the process of fulfilling their order.
The most direct and least costly route through the supply
chain is best for their order, and through the automation of Artificial
Intelligence and Automation, most, if not all; of the delays caused by the
hands of workers are gone, accelerating the speed of the process.
It's about speed, which is all about trust and loyalty from
the customer.
The Cost of Convenience
The transport of perishables through refrigerated transport
has created a new demand and a new cost for the environment, as the demand for
e-commerce drives the need for chain logistics to transport food.
The advantage of e-commerce is it's limitless; from
anywhere, one can sell perishables from one point to sell them to another point
anywhere; as such, refrigerated transport and deliveries are now a cost, as
they provideno option to avoid the cost of the environment; they take power to
cycle the cooling systems, and they wrap perishables for delivery.
The packaging of goods must also be addressed, as the
default position taken by all packages is to create waste. The first and
simplest approach to avoid this waste is to use a cooler box. The most direct
method of removing this waste is to use a hybrid cooler box. It is also a
closed and single-use hybrid box. It is, however, an energy-efficient closed
hybrid box. The result is a reusable unit which has a cooler box system
constructed within the material for the delivery of your goods; with less
energy consumption for the process and less 'cubic' volume for the cooling
unit. These boxes are made from food-grade materials.
ForDirect connects with around 80% of the population in the
United States within two days and 90% within three, we are able to direct the
deliveries of the goods within the United States.
The creation of new challenges is a given. More time spent
transiting. New regulations. New customs procedures. More complicated,
prolonged temperature control.
The international transportation of temperature-sensitive
goods through the 'cold chain' has become a highly regulated, multi-player
enterprise. Integration of all players is a necessity. One border crossing
delay affects the entire shipment.
Forecasting
Today's e-commerce landscape is continuing to develop at a
breakneck pace.
Cold chain logistics is no longer a background support
service. It has become a fundamental component of e-commerce. Firms committing
to modern sustainable technologies are ensuring their future.
An entire ecosystem is operational to preserve the integrity
of each grocery box or temperature-sensitive cargo delivered to a customer's
doorstep.
