During the medieval age in Europe, the stirrups are considered as one of
the most significant inventions. It may sound unbelievable, but it is true.
Although the invention of the stirrups took place in the other parts of the
world much earlier, they reached Europe in the medieval period only.
If you check the history, you can see that stirrups had played an
important role in the knightly class which was the center of warfare in
Medieval Europe. The reason is that it helps to mount the horse quickly and
safely. Along with that, it also gave the worrier better hold and balance to
control and fight from the horseback.

of the Stirrups:
It has been written in some authentic sources that stirrups were
invented in Asia. The use of stirrups was quite common all over Asia before the
medieval era. For example, historians have found the reference of the toe loops
which fixed to the saddler’s bottom. Those loops that were invented around 500
B.C. initially, it was made of leather and rope. When the Central Asian tribes
attack Europe, it was the first time, the European army experienced stirrups.
In approximately the 7th century, the Hungarian Avar Warriors have
already started to use the stirrups. After that, this tool was passed on to the
Byzantine imperial troops. When the Northern European regions were attacked by
the Vikings, then they started to use the stirrups to improve their war
skill.
As per some sources, the Stirrups arrived in France around the early 8th
century. Surprisingly, the use of stirrups was started in England much later
which was at the end of the 10th century.
Influence of Stirrups:
The nature of warfare was greatly influenced by the advent of the
stirrups in medieval Europe. It may sound unbelievable, but the rise of the
knightly class in the 7th and 8th century is directly associated with the
introduction and use of stirrups. It is because, before that, the warriors
found it difficult to balance on the horseback during the fight.
While using stirrups, the knights and warriors found it quite easy and
controllable to mount one the horseback stably in time of using the swords in
combat. Though the importance of infantry was quite huge, the calvaries in
European armies also started to gain significance. With time the importance of
the calvary passed the infantry due to efficiency, and thus the knightly class
was initiated.
Development of Stirrups:
The early models of stirrups were quite different from what we have today.
Initially, it was made of rope or leather. The use of iron and other metals was
started later.
Moreover, the stirrups we had in the earlier time did not have the same
shape as they have now. With time, the evolution of the form of the stirrups
took place, and finally, it got the present form.
There are so many types of stirrups are available like peacock stirrups,
Western stirrups, covered toes stirrups, magnetic safety stirrups, and other safety
stirrups.
At present time, safety is the most important thing while selecting the
stirrups. The good safety stirrups come with the feature that in time of the
accident the foot of the rider immediately releases from the stirrups so that
he/she will not drag behind the horse. To ensure the safety of the rider, most
of the manufacturers bring out stirrups with different types of safety
features.
