Let’s Checkout the Brief History of the Stirrups:

It has been written in some authentic sources that stirrups were invented in Asia. The use of stirrups was quite common all over Asia before the medieval era. For example, historians have found the reference of the toe loops which fixed to the saddler’s bottom. Those loops that were invented around 500 B.C. initially, it was made of leather and rope. When the Central Asian tribes attack Europe, it was the first time, the European army experienced stirrups.

In approximately the 7th century, the Hungarian Avar Warriors have already started to use the stirrups. After that, this tool was passed on to the Byzantine imperial troops. When the Northern European regions were attacked by the Vikings, then they started to use the stirrups to improve their war skill.

As per some sources, the Stirrups arrived in France around the early 8th century. Surprisingly, the use of stirrups was started in England much later which was at the end of the 10th century.

Influence of Stirrups:

The nature of warfare was greatly influenced by the advent of the stirrups in medieval Europe. It may sound unbelievable, but the rise of the knightly class in the 7th and 8th century is directly associated with the introduction and use of stirrups. It is because, before that, the warriors found it difficult to balance on the horseback during the fight.

While using stirrups, the knights and warriors found it quite easy and controllable to mount one the horseback stably in time of using the swords in combat. Though the importance of infantry was quite huge, the calvaries in European armies also started to gain significance. With time the importance of the calvary passed the infantry due to efficiency, and thus the knightly class was initiated.

Development of Stirrups:

The early models of stirrups were quite different from what we have today. Initially, it was made of rope or leather. The use of iron and other metals was started later.

Moreover, the stirrups we had in the earlier time did not have the same shape as they have now. With time, the evolution of the form of the stirrups took place, and finally, it got the present form.

There are so many types of stirrups are available like peacock stirrups, Western stirrups, covered toes stirrups, magnetic safety stirrups, and other safety stirrups.

At present time, safety is the most important thing while selecting the stirrups. The good safety stirrups come with the feature that in time of the accident the foot of the rider immediately releases from the stirrups so that he/she will not drag behind the horse. To ensure the safety of the rider, most of the manufacturers bring out stirrups with different types of safety features.
