Every 40 seconds someone in the United States suffers a stroke and every four minutes, some die. Immediate recognition and treatment within the "golden window" of time significantly improves patient outcomes. The new ASLS curriculum teaches healthcare professionals to recognize and respond quickly to patients having a suspected stroke. The 8-hour course addresses the prehospital, emergency department and inpatient hospital management of patients with acute stroke by incorporating interactive discussions, hands-on workshops, video cases and standardized patient simulations. It was developed by the University of Miami Gordon Center for Simulation and Innovation in Medical Education in partnership with the American Heart Association. The course is also available in International English and Spanish.
Advanced Stroke Life Support (ASLS) not only focuses on the clinical aspects of stroke management but also emphasizes the importance of patient education as a critical component in improving stroke outcomes. ASLS emphasizes that patient education begins the moment a stroke is suspected or diagnosed. By educating patients on the "FAST" acronym (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911), healthcare professionals can empower individuals to recognize the early signs of stroke, leading to quicker interventions and better outcomes.
The Advanced Stroke Life Support program also underscores the importance of involving family members in the patient’s care and education. Families often play a crucial role in the early recognition of stroke symptoms and in the decision to seek emergency care. ASLS-trained professionals ensure that families are informed about the potential risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking, and the lifestyle changes needed to reduce these risks. They are also educated on the importance of medication adherence and the potential warning signs of a recurrent stroke.
ASLS emphasizes patient education, teaching healthcare professionals to use simple, easily understood instructions for the family and patients to help reduce confusion during the critical first few moments after stroke occurs. The new course also teaches the importance of early transport to a designated stroke care center, which can increase the chance of saving lives and reducing long-term disabilities.
Designed by experts in stroke, emergency medicine, prehospital care and nursing education, the ASLS course is used to train thousands of EMS personnel, nurses and physicians from hundreds of institutions across the U.S. and abroad. The new blended learning format combines online, self-directed education with in-person skills testing sessions led by an ASLS instructor. This approach allows students to learn on their own schedule and at their own pace while ensuring that instructors are able to focus on psychomotor skill testing.
