How to Oil a Gun's Interior
You don't want to leave a lot of oil residue on your rifle barrel. Excess oil may impair its capacity to fire.
Run a lightly greased patch through the barrel instead. Use a gun oil formulated exclusively for weapons. Following that, push a completely new, dry patch through the bore a couple of times. This will not only keep it rust-free. Running those patches through your pistol may loosen filth and small insects that have made their way inside the barrel.
A very thin layer of oil in a gun barrel is especially useful if you intend to preserve your firearms for an extended length of time. It can also aid in the neutralisation of any solvents left in the barrel after cleaning.
How Frequently Should I Oil My Gun?
After cleaning your gun using solvents, you should oil it. Again, only a thin layer of oil is required. After lubrication, always pass a dry patch through the barrel twice. If your firearm has been in long-term storage, make sure to clean it thoroughly before firing the first shot.
Is it OK to use WD-40 on my gun?
WD-40 is a water displacement product, not a gun lubricant. It is recommended to select a product designed exclusively for gun lubrication. If you look at the WD-40 safety data sheet, you'll notice that it contains less than 35% oil.
