Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Why Is Your Company Culture So Important?

Jobhop Jobhop's blog

If you’re reading this then you’ve probably read a few other posts on company culture, perhaps you now realise your company culture is a good one or the opposite, you’ve woken up to the fact that your company culture needs to change.

There are the usual benefits of having a good company culture, such as:

  • Attracting great candidates
  • Retaining employees
  • Loyalty
  • Increasing productivity
  • Cutting recruitment costs
  • Happy employees
  • Happy customers
  • And more.

But let’s have a look at what is going on around us and discover why company culture is even more important than you originally thought it was.

It used to be the case that every young person wanted to be an entrepreneur but a recent report commissioned by Google shows a serious lack of ambition in the UK, it seems that young people just want a job and a salary.

So, is this a good thing? Yes and no is the answer to that. It’s good that young people want jobs. However, it’s not so good when young people lose that entrepreneurial spark. Because technology creates many changes daily, businesses need young people who can think like an entrepreneur, who are quick to adapt and are always mission focussed. Businesses like Virgin have thrived because of their entrepreneurial thinking employees, their intrapreneurs. That’s challenge number one, your business is in competition to attract intrapreneurs, they are sought after so you better make sure your company culture entices them.

Challenge number two is overcoming job hopping. Everyone wants a job, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to stay in a job. Job hopping is the norm now, the average lifespan of a job is just three years. If someone starts at your company and then realise it’s not ticking all the boxes, then they will have no hesitation to job hop. Your company culture has to be part of what attracts your ideal candidate to the job and also a part of what keeps them there. If you have a great company culture it will take a lot to entice employees away to somewhere else, company culture features as one of the top reasons why people stay in a job, it beats money hands down.

Challenge number three is cutting through the noise. The internet is a very noisy place, there’s constant chatter, sharing of posts, broadcasts, videos, pictures, podcasts, sometimes it feels like content overload. When the content is poor, spammy or similar to everything else, people tend to switch off. What has power though is your employees chatter on social media. When your employees say how much they love to work there, when they say how they use the product and wouldn’t consider anything else, when they talk about the excitement of adding a new dish to the menu, people listen to those types of messages. In general, people believe what employees say more than any costly advertising campaign and more than the owner tweeting “This is a great company to work for.”  The company needs to be so good that your employees continuously rave about it.

Challenge number four is getting seen organically. It's becoming harder for social media posts to be seen organically, it’s happened on Facebook, it’s happening on Instagram and Twitter, if you want to be seen then be prepared to pay a few quid. There is an alternative if you want posts about your company to be seen organically then it’s going to require a great company culture and a lot of help. When you have a great company culture, and you have employees raving about it on social media, their messages have more power than if you paid a marketing agency.

Content shared by employees receive 8 x more engagement and their messages reach 561% further. Company culture and employee advocacy is paramount.

So there you have it, a few more reasons why a great company culture is important.
