Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Recruiting With Snapchat
My teenage son is constantly horrified that his mum lurks about on a number of social media platforms, but he felt safe knowing that the one place he completely owned was Snapchat, not anymore!
Because so many young people love Snapchat, I thought I need to suck it up and get to grips with it.
I’d ventured onto it a while back, and then I wrote a post called “Could Snapchat get you a job?” but now I wanted to look at it from a recruiting angle.
Jobhop prides itself on showing employers how to tap into the social media networks where young digital talent hang out, we can’t just say “they hang out on Snapchat” and then not explain how to engage with them on there, a blog post was much needed.
When I heard that Jackye Clayton and Katrina Kibben were having a blab about recruiting with Snapchat I thought I must attend; it was an hour well spent! They had a super guest on, Jose Watson, who hadn’t been social recruiting for too long however he had embraced Snapchat fully and was a whizz with it.
I chatted with Jose about how I like Periscope and how it’s super powerful for showing potential candidates the internal brand of a company. Jose was insistent that Snapchat could do the same, and he talked me through a few ideas. His ideas were very similar to what we had been playing with already, but we’d been doing it on Periscope.
Many employers I meet have not heard of Periscope, but when you mention Snapchat they tend to pull a painful face because they know their teenage sons and daughters use it, so that’s one point to Snapchat, many employers have heard of it!
First of all, as an employer why would you use Snapchat?
You would use Snapchat if you were looking to engage with a young, cool, fast, digital savvy market. Over 70% of users are under the age of 34 and the 18 -24 year-olds use it the most. If your business needs to attract young digital-savvy talent then perhaps Snapchat could be a medium for you.
So, how as an employer would you use it?
Just like when you use any social media, it pays to be connected otherwise it feels like you’re standing in an empty room. Once you’ve built up your connections, there are a couple of ways to use it.
Attracting young talent to your company
You could go about doing this by creating a story. A story is a collection of snaps, which are pictures or videos.
Fo example one story could start off with a picture ( snap) of the reception because that’s the first place everyone sees when they come to work, then a snap of the kitchen, making a cup of tea, followed by a snap of everyone at the ideas meeting. This type of story gives candidates an insight into what happens in the workplace. Other stories could include, the recruitment process or individual types of jobs, they could be done in the style of “in the day of a...” Young people are attracted to companies with a great culture, so get your culture out there with a Snap story ( collection of snaps )
Build relationships
Just as you would on any social media platform, on Snapchat you do the same, you build relationships. When your ideal candidate snaps something that’s of interest, then send a chat to comment on it.
Send a snapchat
After a while you will have built your community of potential candidates, you regularly engage with them, and now it’s time to take it up a notch.
How about sending them a snapchat of a chair in the office with their name on it or a coffee mug in the kitchen with their name on it.
You can get very creative, and this is why Snapchat is so much fun!
Receive snapchats
This is where you ask your community to get creative. Hold your recruitment campaign on Snapchat and whoever gets their snap message across in a brilliant way and explain why they should be chosen for the role will get invited to an interview.
As you can see, there are many ways to have fun with Snapchat but seriously recruit good people at the same time.
