Jobhop Jobhop's blog : Company Culture Cannot Be Dictated

Jobhop Jobhop's blog

Company culture is firmly rooted ..”it’s the way things are done around here” whether that be for good or for bad

A good company culture attracts like minded people to be part of it and will help grow the business

A bad company culture attracts like minded people to be part of it and will help the business fail.

A good company culture is when the company is certain of their beliefs, values, mission and vision, everyone who is part of the company takes on those beliefs, values, mission and vision as their own.

The personality of the company and the personality of the employee should match.

The company culture is handed down, everyone accepts the culture and will do their upmost to protect it. When a company is completely comfortable with their culture they will only hire for culture, anybody else would be a misfit.

A bad company culture is when a company is unsure of their beliefs, they don’t tend to have values, they’ve forgotten what the mission was and they have no vision, they’re just surviving day to day.

They hire like their firefighting and are desperate.

If you believe your company culture needs a revamp, don’t make the mistake of sending out a memo to everyone to say that there’s now bar football and you want to see happy faces from now on! Bar football doesn’t make a company culture! Just think about it, if you’ve got a disgruntled work-force do you really think that bar football will change that?

You cannot dictate a company culture but here’s what you can do:

Influence

It cannot be dictated from the top but you can influence. Whenever you get the chance talk about the company values then make sure you do. Have the values painted onto the walls of the office, make sure they’re on every email you send your employees, even get them printed onto the company tea mugs!

Guide

You’ve hired your employees on their personality match and their talent, it makes no sense to then start dictating to them. However, people are always happy to be guided. You can provide a  guide when they first join the company which could include tips on recycling, how innovation is rewarded, intrapreneur case studies, employee get togethers, the 7 step system to wowing every customer etc...

You can also guide via videos, podcasts, blogs and even tweets.

Show

Everything is a learned behaviour so by constantly showing what you do according to the culture of the company then your employees will be constantly learning what to do and they will follow. If you’re not very hands on then it will be down to your ambassadors to do the showing.

Repeat

Repetition is the mother of all learning. Everything is a learned behaviour so it makes sense to continuously repeat what you show.  Showing is level 1 which is exposure. Repeating the action is level 2 which is retention, the action gets transferred from short term memory to long term memory,

So before you get the bar football get the company culture right

Begin creating a positive, contagious company culture today!
