You want to be a salesperson, but what qualities do you need?
The saying goes “a salesperson is born, not made” is that true?
There are many qualities a sales person needs, determination and the drive to succeed is what’s mainly required.
A few other qualities a salesperson must have are:
Likeability
Sales people need likeability because people buy from people and if you have trouble getting on with other people that could be a big problem.
Potential customers should be comfortable around you and want to buy from you. When customers want to buy from you and no-one else you know you’re doing a good job, it makes the life of a sales person easier, and that’s down to being liked.
Fearless
To some people, you would mention selling, and they freeze, why is that? They have a fear of putting themselves out there and being rejected, but in sales, you can’t fear rejection. The fearless will relentlessly cold call potential customers, knock on doors of homes, walk into businesses and without knowing the managing director will ask to speak to them. The fearless know that it’s a numbers game and out of one hundred calls they’ll convert some into paying customers.
Connections
Salespeople love to connect; they understand the power of the second connection which means who they’re connected to could know a potential customer who they’d happily refer. Super savvy sales people will have referral fee systems set up and will let their connections know that if they pass customers their way they’ll get paid. Referrals are great for sales people because when a sales person gets recommended it becomes social proof. We like to trust friends, family and connections and would always rather use who they recommend to us.
Hard working
A dedicated sales person is not a clock watcher. If they think they could complete a sale, but by doing so they won't get home for another couple of hours, they'll always choose to stay and complete the sale. In a way, they become addicted to the sale or the reward that comes with it because good salespeople receive good rewards.
