Jobhop Jobhop's blog : National Day of Unplugging and What You Can Do

Jobhop Jobhop's blog

Today is National Day of Unplugging which is all about creating awareness of digital overload and the need to unplug every once in a while.

As an employer though you’re probably thinking that unplugging means that business will go into freefall and of course that cannot be allowed to happen.

There are some other steps that employers can take that won’t be so drastic but will still support National day of unplugging

Digital Addiction Awareness

Digital addiction is real but so many people are not aware of it, and that could include your employees. Obsessively checking Facebook or Twitter isn’t good, especially if someone can’t control it anymore. Create some content around digital addiction for your employees, so they know that there’s help there if it’s ever needed.

Some simple questions like:

Can you ever go without being digitally connected?

Do you guilty about your internet use?

Have you neglected friends and family because of your internet use?

Have you gotten into trouble due to obsessive internet activity?

Include a number to a local counsellor who specialises in digital addiction.

Digital Free Zone

Taking a break from digital is healthy, it gives your mind a chance to switch off & re-energise. If we were doing something physical for hours we would be expected to take a break so why isn’t that the case with digital consumption? What tends to happen is break times mean just hopping straight on to a different screen! Create a digital free zone within the office; it could be a separate room or a cosy chill out corner. Anyone that uses the zone cannot use any digital devices; it’s for reading books or even meditating.

Unplugging Party

Businesses can’t unplug for the day, but you can hold an unplugging party for just 30 mins, to give everyone a break from their devices.

Hold the party in a room where employees have to get up and move away from their workstations. Any excuse for cakes and streamers is always good, and it will give your employees a chance to re-energise. It’s a win-win because they’ll be more productive once they go back to work.
