Tech Marionette itself is culture driven; the founders conscientiously made company culture their priority and are building the whole business around it.
Dom said that they wanted a place where people would choose to work there, they wanted a place where employees were excited about being there each day.
Tech Marionette doesn't buy into the “must get a ping pong table” trend where businesses believe that to have a healthy company culture a ping-pong table or bar football is a must. For Tech Marionette company culture is deeper than that, it’s not about the frills, it’s about creating software that each one of them is proud of, working on the same team, and working towards one mission. Dom believes that what's being achieved at Tech Marionette is far more rewarding than having a ping pong match. Dom goes onto to say that ping pong tables can be distracting and employees feeling obliged to play ping pong or feeling pressurised to join a ping-pong team isn't a good company culture. Some companies have a communication breakdown; the managing director may say one thing about the company culture but employees say and do another thing. Dom advises companies not to create a dictatorship because that’s not how it works, he believes the employees own the company culture, so start off by actually working out what the employees believe the company culture to be.
The advice Dom gives is, if a company realises that they have a bad company culture, set a plan to change it, it will take commitment, and it may mean asking some employees to leave.
Once a company knows the intended company culture, then they must hire for culture. Dom also says hire slow but fire fast and in the video he talks about a company who hired completely wrong which forced them to fire fast.
