Jobhop Jobhop's blog : 5 Ways Twitter Lists Can Help Job Seekers

Jobhop Jobhop's blog

Jobhop follows well over 1,000 people on Twitter. So getting anything valuable out of our news feed would take hours of scrolling, and ain't nobody got time for that. For a while, we tried to limit the number of people that we followed, but eventually we gave up. Then we found the true beauty of Twitter lists.

There are some great articles around on the use of Twitter for finding work. However, there doesn't seem to be many on the effective use of the Twitter lists feature for your job search.

Twitters lists feature allows you to separate the people you follow into groups (or lists). If you're fairly new to Twitter, the stream of updates and chatter can easily become overwhelming.

Lists make Twitter both more useful and more manageable for job seekers.

You can create a Twitter list by clicking your avatar in the top left corner and by clicking 'lists'.

This is where you're able to see any lists that you have created or subscribed to or that you're a member of (meaning someone else has added you to a list). Click 'create a new list' in the right hand column.

Name your list and give it a description. Click 'save list'.

To add another user to a list, go to their profile and click the button right next to the follow button.

You will see a list of possible lists to add the user to. Check the box next to the name of your desired list.

It's as easy as that!

But how can these lists help you during your job search? There is so many ways. Today, we're going to go over 5 ways that Twitter lists can help jobseekers.

1. ORGANISATION

By creating and labelling your own lists, you're able to keep themed areas of interest together. You may have careers coaches in one list and job boards in another; or you can arrange lists by industry, such as digital marketers on one list, web developers on another, for example.

2. TIME SAVING

The more people you follow, the more tweets you will be wading through, and the greater the chance that you will miss something useful. Keeping up to date with what people are saying becomes increasingly more time consuming as you follow more people, but lists mean you're able to dip in and out to get snippets of useful information without trawling back through pages of tweets.

3.  TARGET COMPANIES WITHOUT THEM KNOWING

If you create a private list of companies you're targeting, you can learn a lot about them without these companies having any idea that you're there.

4. GET AN INFLUENCER'S ATTENTION

Users get a notification when you add them to a public Twitter list, and most of the time, users will check out your list and profile when you do this. If there are influencers in your industry that you want to notice you, this is one way of doing that. By continuously interacting with their content and adding them to lists, they are sure to begin recognising your name.

5. CREATE A LIST OF COMPANIES WHO YOU WOULD LOVE TO WORK FOR

Do you have one dream company where you really must find employment? You could make that company the sole member of a list so you can easily view just their tweets. Company's Twitter feeds don't usually mention their hiring needs however, in a list it's easy to monitor their tweets to learn more about their culture and to communicate with them.

Trust me, if you're serious about landing that perfect job, you can't afford to leave any stone unturned.

Chances are that your competition are probably relying family connections, friends and LinkedIn as their sources for future employment. Although those are all great starts, by integrating Twitter into your job search, you're able to add a great new tool that will help you gain an edge over other job seekers.

Twitter has recently become a huge vehicle in the business world for consumers, businesses and job seekers alike. Don't get behind the times. Create a Twitter account if you haven't already, and start using the lists tool in the ways we described above in order to maximise your job transition experience.
